Venture capital,  known as VC for short, is financial capital provided to early-stage, high-potential, high risk, growth startup companies. Not all small businesses will be able to acquire funding with this method. The venture capital fund makes money by owning equity in the companies it invests in, which often (but not always) have a novel technology or business model in high technology industries, such as biotechnology, IT, software, etc. The typical venture capital investment occurs after the seed funding round as growth funding round in the interest of generating a return through an eventual end-goal event, such as an initial public offering or sale of the company. Venture capital is a subset of private equity. Therefore, all venture capital is private equity, but not all private equity is venture capital.

Listed below is a subjective list of the top ten venture capital firms. This list is not the result of a statistical survey, nor are the VC firms arranged by size. The list is compiled based upon this author’s subjective opinion, and opinions can and do vary.
